Rights and reproductions

The Johnson Atelier manages the usage of works by Seward Johnson through copyright and trademark.

We support and review the usage of high-resolution images of their artworks. We also support usage of Fine Art and Non-Fine Art material in museum collections. The Johnson Atelier seeks to promote the fair use of material in scholarly, educational, and non-profit projects.

General Image Use

Reproductions of artworks by Seward Johnson may not be cropped or distorted, whether by rotation, inversion, change of proportion, color alteration, superimposition, animation, cartooning, removal of blemishes or inscriptions, or other methods. Credit information must appear alongside the image, with his name, artwork title, date, size, medium, accession number, and gift information.

The Johnson Atelier does not assume any responsibility for infringement of copyright or publication rights for materials held by others. The applicant assumes all responsibility for obtaining permission from copyright holders and is subject to any claims under the Copyright Law and laws of libel as the result of the publication.

Artwork Reproduction

Please allow a minimum of ten business days to obtain a license. The Johnson Atelier clears intellectual property rights only; the procurement of photography is a separate function and is the responsibility of the user. Fees and conditions of use may apply for the provision of high-resolution files.

Archives Reproduction (Non-Fine Arts Collection)

Requests for images of collection objects, including art materials, personal property, library, and archival materials, and Museum owned properties, are evaluated for the appropriate context. Fees apply for image delivery and licensing fees. If existing photography does not exist requests for new photography will be considered.

Media Requests

The Johnson Atelier evaluates requests for images for publicity/promotional purposes. This includes requests from contributors to, and representatives of, online/print commercial publications, as well as film/video productions, of which the primary benefit of publication is to enhance the Johnson Atelier’s positive visibility. Requests must be made in writing; public relations will determine if the requested image use is appropriate and beneficial to the Museum’s promotion. Fees may apply.
